The room takes its cue from your nervous system. What is yours telling them?

Nervous system education, ceremony support, and practitioner training built on over three decades of western medicine as a nurse: 26 years in emergency and trauma medicine and 10 in complementary and integrative health.

Begin Here

This mark breathes at six breaths per minute, the rate shown to maximize heart rate variability. Breathe with it.

The Premise

Calm is a skill with a mechanism. It can be measured, trained, and borrowed.

I spent 26 years in emergency and trauma medicine learning that the steadiest nervous system in the room sets the ceiling for everyone else’s. Insight alone does not create that steadiness. Willpower does not either. Regulation is a physiological capacity, and like any capacity, it can be built. The Regulated Field is my curriculum for building it, grounded in the science of how a body actually finds safety.

The Framework

The Regulated Field rests on four pillars of nervous system science.

Each concept in the curriculum traces to a mechanism the research supports. If it cannot survive scrutiny, it does not belong in the container.

Allostasis

The body does not seek balance. It predicts demand and budgets energy to meet it. Chronic stress is a budgeting problem, and it can be re-budgeted.

Interoception

The felt sense of the body’s internal state. Accuracy here is trainable, and it is the foundation of every regulation skill that follows.

Predictive Processing

The brain experiences what it expects, then corrects. Old threat predictions can be updated through new, embodied evidence of safety.

HRV & Neuroplasticity

Heart rate variability gives regulation a number. Neuroplasticity means the number can change. Practice rewires the system that practices.

i

Recognize the state

First we learn to read where your system actually is. Activated, shut down, or settled inside your window of tolerance. Naming the autonomic state is the beginning of having a say in it.

ii

Build the capacity

Then we widen that window. We practice staying present at the edges of activation in small, tolerable amounts, so your system learns it can feel a great deal and still find its way back to steady.

iii

Let it integrate

Finally we let the experience complete. The body finishes the response it once had to interrupt, releases what it was holding, and settles into a new baseline it can return to on its own.

For over three decades, my work was to be a nervous system holding other nervous systems together in their worst moments. The bedside of the husband whose wife of forty-five years had just died. The mother of the child we could not bring back. The daughter who arrived too late to say goodbye. I held that space, often, while barely understanding my own dysregulation.

Emergency and trauma medicine gave me the first education, 26 years of it. The training was rigorous and the credentials are real. I flew critical patients, examined survivors, ran departments, and built a certified cardiac program from ground zero. That work shaped how I understand pressure, safety, and what it takes to keep someone steady when everything around them is falling apart.

It is one thing to be skilled in a crisis. It is another to be settled enough inside yourself that your calm becomes something another person can borrow.

Ten years of complementary and integrative health practice have been the second education. That decade taught me to do the same holding from a regulated body, which is a different thing entirely from a merely competent one.

Ohm Academy of Healing is the inheritance of both lives. I built it because I believe I can help create genuinely safe environments for this work. Spaces where the container is sound and the person holding it knows exactly what she is doing.

If you are holding space for anyone, someone needs to be holding you.

Write to me and tell me where you are in the work. I read everything myself.
